So today, I journeyed through the conference halls and I must say… there is technological revolution on display. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Sony’s new Xperia X smartphones and Huawei’s new MateBook. Spectators are saying that Huawei may be the next company to give Apple a run for their money, and the MateBook is the first product that will carve out new space for the company. It’s the first 2-in-1 Windows 10 device here at #MWC16, with a 12-inch tablet, a great display, good battery life – and it comes with a handy keyboard case.
At the MasterCard booth and in congress discussions, there has been a great deal of focus on the “selfie” and biometrics. “Consumers hate passwords and the most commonly used password is 123456,” said Ajay Bhalla, MasterCard’s president for enterprise safety and security. Today, most people have mobile phones and Internet access, so companies are excited to leverage biometrics to authenticate their consumers, making the overall experience more seamless and less of a hassle.
Lastly, there is a lot of talk around big telcos needing to shift from being mobile service providers with “pipes and devices” to becoming credible content aggregator and delivery brands. Verizon and AT&T have most recently joined Open Compute Project, a Facebook-led, non-profit project allowing companies to work together to design their own, no-frills hardware including servers, network, and storage gear in the hope of building low-cost computing hardware.
